Frances Collichio's Answers to Faculty Council Questions 1. Mainly I believe that our goals as faculty members are the same as the goals of those in administration.  First, we wish to have outstanding, safe quality patient care and an excellent reputation around the state and the country.  Second, we wish to preserve the goal of maintaining an outstanding teaching environment while facing increasing time pressures and confronting the issues of shrinking resources. Third, we both wish to preserve quality in the faculty and doing this means maintaining time for them to pursue their research. Sometimes administrative personnel need to be reminded that the teaching and research missions are central to our identity.   2. We can maintain academic integrity in the face of increasing financial pressures by 1)improving the efficiency by which we do our work. Examples of how to do this include continuing to pursue a paperless medical records and continued exploitation of work saving platforms through computerized recruiting, grading, planning lectures, etc. 2). Working with our political representatives to lobby representatives in Washington and Raleigh on the importance of maintaining research dollars 3)  Turning more toward industry for the support of our projects.  A balanced relationship with industry can maintain integrity.   3). It is not clear that there are increasing inequalities that are pervasive throughout the organization although some may exist based on divisional management policies. It seems that salary parity both inside and outside the institution are major issues that are being attended to by Dean Roper in the School of Medicine. If disparities exist in other schools that is an issue that I need to be educated about.      4).  I do not think administrators should circumvent faculty on any project.  Faculty need to be included on all major issues. After all the administrators don't do the teaching.   5).  I definitely think there needs to be a balance between academic freedom, education, faculty salary and faculty benefits.  We will maintain outstanding faculty by pursuing all of these goals.
